Can You Have a Hair Transplant Without Shaving Your Head?

In some cases, a hair transplant can be performed using a no-shave or minimally shaved approach. Whether this is appropriate depends on factors such as the number of grafts required, the donor area, existing hair length and density, treatment area, surgical technique, and the complexity of the procedure.

What Is a No-Shave Hair Transplant?

A no-shave hair transplant is an approach in which some or all of the patient's existing hair is left unshaved during the procedure. Depending on the surgical plan, the donor area, recipient area, or both may be left partially or completely unshaved.

What Are the Potential Benefits?

  • Greater Discretion: Keeping existing hair may make temporary changes from the procedure less noticeable.
  • Maintains Existing Hairstyle: Some patients may prefer to avoid significantly changing their hairstyle before surgery.
  • May Be Appropriate for Selected Cases: Certain smaller or strategically planned procedures may be compatible with a no-shave approach.

Is a No-Shave Hair Transplant Right for Everyone?

No. A no-shave approach is not suitable for every patient or every procedure. The number of grafts required, donor hair characteristics, treatment area, hair length, surgical technique, and surgeon preference all influence whether the approach is practical.

How Is the Right Approach Selected?

Dr. Brett Bolton evaluates your hair loss pattern, donor area, existing hair, and restoration goals before recommending an appropriate surgical approach. The priority is to balance your preferences with careful graft harvesting, placement, and long-term hair restoration planning.

With more than 10,000+ Hair Restoration Procedures performed and approximately 75% Corrective Hair Transplant Cases, Dr. Brett Bolton creates customized treatment plans based on each patient's individual needs.

A hair transplant involves relocating follicular units from a suitable donor area to areas affected by hair loss or thinning. The procedure is planned around the patient’s existing hair pattern, available donor hair, and desired level of restoration.

The treatment process includes several stages, including consultation, treatment planning, the procedure itself, recovery, and the gradual development of transplanted hair. Understanding these stages can help patients prepare for the overall restoration journey.

Because hair characteristics and restoration goals differ between patients, the details of treatment can also vary. A personalized consultation provides an opportunity to discuss the procedure and determine an appropriate treatment strategy.

I really did not care about looking really young, but who wants to look 5 years older? And I still had some hair! Imagine what... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
