What Is MaxHarvest™?
How does 12,000–16,000 hairs in one procedure, typically completed in less than 5 hours, sound to you?
A MaxHarvest™ Hair Transplant is a specialized hair restoration surgery developed by Dr. Brett Bolton. It incorporates a distinctive harvesting technique that safely extracts the maximum number of hairs possible based on the individual's scalp elasticity and donor area condition.
Unlike conventional hair transplant procedures, the MaxHarvest™ technique is designed to give each patient the best opportunity to achieve maximum results based on their individual variables in just one procedure.
MaxHarvest™ Advantages
The MaxHarvest™ technique is designed around maximizing the amount of hair harvested while reducing unnecessary surgery time.
1 The Most Hair Possible
With the MaxHarvest™ procedure, Dr. Bolton extracts the most donor tissue possible based on the elasticity of the scalp. This means a potential yield of 12,000–16,000 hairs for most patients in a single session, typically completed in less than 5 hours.
2 Designed to Minimize Scar Visibility
Dr. Bolton has developed a harvesting approach designed to minimize the visibility of the donor scar while harvesting donor hair.
3 Less Transection
Popular FUE procedures can transect the bulb of the follicle during extraction. With the MaxHarvest™ technique, follicles can be carefully separated under magnification to help prevent damage to each hair.
4 More Resilient
Compared with FUE, MaxHarvest™ is designed to reduce harvesting time, resulting in less overall surgery time and less time for delicate tissue to remain outside the body.
5 Faster Surgery
Less harvesting time means a faster surgery, which may help reduce overall procedure time, anesthesia exposure, swelling, and patient discomfort.
Our Unique Harvesting Technique
The MaxHarvest™ harvesting technique is designed to maximize the amount of donor hair available for transplantation while carefully handling the harvested tissue.
Maximum Donor Hair Harvest
The amount of donor hair that can be harvested depends on individual factors, including scalp elasticity and the condition of the donor area. MaxHarvest™ is designed to safely extract the maximum number of hairs possible based on those individual variables.
Careful Handling Under Magnification
The harvested follicles can be carefully separated under magnification. This approach is designed to help minimize follicular damage during the preparation of the hair for transplantation.
More Hair With Fewer Surgeries
The goal of the MaxHarvest™ technique is to give patients the best opportunity to achieve maximum results based on their individual characteristics, potentially allowing more hair to be transplanted in a single procedure.
At Great Hair Transplants, we don't count grafts. We give you more hair.
The Evolution of MaxHarvest™
MaxHarvest™ was developed through Dr. Brett Bolton's experience with hair restoration surgery and his focus on maximizing the amount of hair available for transplantation.
Dr. Bolton's approach to hair restoration has evolved through years of performing hair transplant procedures and studying the factors that affect the amount of donor hair that can be safely harvested.
The MaxHarvest™ technique was developed to address one of the fundamental challenges in hair restoration: maximizing the amount of available donor hair while carefully preserving the harvested follicles.
By combining a specialized harvesting technique with careful handling and preparation of the harvested hair, MaxHarvest™ is designed to provide the maximum amount of transplanted hair possible based on each patient's individual donor area and scalp characteristics.
Dr. Bolton's Goal
The goal of MaxHarvest™ is simple: maximize the amount of hair that can be safely harvested and transplanted while maintaining a natural-looking result.
MaxHarvest™ Compared With FUE
MaxHarvest™ and FUE use different approaches to harvesting donor hair. Dr. Bolton developed MaxHarvest™ with the goal of maximizing the amount of hair that can be harvested during a single procedure.
MaxHarvest™
- Designed to harvest the maximum number of hairs possible based on the patient's individual donor area.
- MaxHarvest™ may yield approximately 12,000–16,000 hairs in a single session for most patients, depending on individual variables.
- Typically completed in less than five hours.
- Designed to minimize unnecessary harvesting time and handling of delicate tissue.
FUE
- FUE removes individual follicular units from the donor area using an extraction technique.
- FUE can require substantially more time for harvesting because individual follicular units are extracted one at a time.
- The page also discusses the potential for follicular transection during extraction.
- Individual candidacy and the appropriate harvesting approach should be determined during consultation.
Which Approach Is Right for You?
Every patient has different donor-area characteristics, scalp elasticity, and hair-restoration needs. Dr. Bolton evaluates these individual factors to determine the appropriate approach for each patient.

Our Pricing Philosophy
Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.
Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.
While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
