How Soon Can I Resume Normal Activities After a Hair Transplant?

Returning to normal activities after a hair transplant depends on the procedure performed, the extent of treatment, and how your scalp is healing. Many patients can resume light daily activities relatively soon, while exercise and other activities that place stress on the scalp may need to be postponed until the surgeon confirms that they are appropriate.

What Can I Expect During the First Few Days?

During the early recovery period, the scalp may be sensitive and may show temporary redness, swelling, or small crusts. Patients should follow their surgeon's instructions carefully and avoid unnecessary contact with the transplanted areas.

When Can I Return to Work?

The timing depends on your type of work and the visibility of early healing changes. Patients with sedentary work may be able to return sooner, while physically demanding jobs may require additional recovery time. Your surgeon can provide individualized guidance based on your procedure and occupation.

When Can I Exercise?

Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that cause significant sweating or physical contact may need to be avoided during the early recovery period. The appropriate time to resume these activities should be determined by your surgeon based on how your scalp is healing.

What Other Activities May Need to Be Limited?

  • Swimming or activities that expose the scalp to water or chemicals.
  • Direct and prolonged sun exposure.
  • Activities that could rub, impact, or disturb the transplanted grafts.
  • Heavy physical exertion until cleared by your surgical team.

Why Is Following Activity Restrictions Important?

The newly treated scalp needs time to recover. Following activity restrictions and other post-operative instructions can help protect the healing areas and reduce unnecessary irritation during the early recovery period.

During your consultation and follow-up care, Dr. Brett Bolton will explain when you can safely resume your usual activities based on your individual procedure and recovery progress.

Recovery is an important stage of the hair transplant process because the scalp needs time to heal following treatment. Patients may experience temporary changes in the treated areas while the scalp recovers and transplanted follicles begin progressing through their natural growth cycle.

The appearance of transplanted hair can change during recovery, and visible growth generally develops gradually rather than immediately after the procedure. Following appropriate post-treatment instructions can help support the healing process.

Understanding the recovery timeline can help patients prepare for the weeks and months following treatment. Individual healing can vary, so patients should follow the guidance provided by their hair restoration professional and discuss concerns during follow-up care.

Have been receding since a teenager. At the age of 23, I scheduled a last minute procedure with Bolton and extremely happy with the result (8,000 hairs moved). I am only at 4.5mos post-op (Full results are typically at 12mos). Josh was my patient advisor and provided me with realistic expectations... Read Patient Experience →

I have had 6 or 7 hair transplant sessions with as many doctors over a 25 year period. I paid a lot of money with moderate results. I have had plugs and FUE. They charge a lot of money for each one and encourage FUE because it costs a lot more in the long run. Dr. Bolton and his staff were straight... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
