Is Hair Transplant Surgery Painful?

One of the most common questions about hair transplantation is whether the procedure is painful. Most patients tolerate the procedure well because local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment areas. You may feel brief discomfort while the anesthesia is administered, but the scalp should remain numb during the surgical portion of the procedure.

Will I Feel Pain During a Hair Transplant?

The most noticeable sensation for many patients is the administration of local anesthesia. Once the scalp is adequately numb, most patients experience little to no significant pain during the procedure. Individual experiences can vary depending on the procedure, sensitivity, and other factors.

What Does Hair Transplant Recovery Feel Like?

After surgery, some patients experience temporary soreness, tightness, tenderness, swelling, or scalp sensitivity. These symptoms generally improve as the scalp heals. Your post-operative instructions will explain how to care for the treated areas during recovery.

What Can Help Make Recovery More Comfortable?

  • Follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions.
  • Use medications only as directed by your surgical team.
  • Sleep in the recommended position during the early recovery period.
  • Avoid strenuous activities until your surgeon advises that they are appropriate.
  • Attend recommended follow-up appointments.

Does the Number of Grafts Affect Recovery?

Recovery can vary depending on the procedure performed, the number of grafts involved, the areas treated, and individual healing characteristics. Your surgeon can provide more specific expectations after evaluating your restoration plan.

What Should I Expect Before My Procedure?

During your consultation, Dr. Brett Bolton can explain the planned procedure, anesthesia, recovery process, and aftercare instructions so you understand what to expect throughout your hair restoration journey.

Natural-looking hair restoration depends on careful planning and consideration of how transplanted hair will complement the patient’s existing hair. Factors such as hairline design, hair characteristics, donor availability, and the distribution of existing hair can all be relevant.

The placement of transplanted follicular units is planned according to the areas requiring restoration and the overall appearance the treatment is intended to achieve. Individual hair characteristics can influence how density and coverage are approached.

Patients considering hair transplantation can benefit from discussing their desired appearance and long-term goals during consultation. Understanding how treatment planning relates to natural-looking restoration can help patients make informed decisions about their options.

The results speak for themselves - absolutely uncanny. Like many others, I was naturally a skeptic of hair transplants and the results they could provide. I had already undergone a FUE transplant (not recommended) elsewhere a couple years earlier and did not obtain the results I was hoping for. So,... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
