Why Is Magnification Used When Preparing Hair Transplant Grafts?

Careful preparation of follicular grafts is an important part of hair transplant surgery. Magnification allows the surgical team to examine individual follicular units more closely during preparation and helps reduce unnecessary handling or damage.

How Does Magnification Help During Graft Preparation?

  • Detailed Inspection: Magnification provides a clearer view of individual follicular structures during preparation.
  • Graft Protection: Close inspection can help reduce avoidable damage while grafts are being dissected and prepared.
  • Follicular Unit Identification: Naturally occurring follicular groupings can be more easily recognized.
  • Consistent Preparation: A controlled preparation process helps maintain graft quality throughout the procedure.
  • Careful Placement: Well-prepared grafts can then be positioned according to the planned hairline, direction, and density.

Why Is Graft Handling Important?

Each follicular unit contains delicate structures that need to be handled carefully. Graft preparation is therefore one component of a larger surgical process that includes donor harvesting, storage, placement, and overall treatment planning.

Does Magnification Alone Determine the Result?

No. Hair transplant outcomes depend on multiple factors, including patient selection, donor hair characteristics, surgical planning, graft handling, placement technique, and the individual's healing and growth response. Magnification is one tool used to support careful graft preparation.

During your consultation, Dr. Brett Bolton can explain how graft preparation, surgical technique, and personalized planning are incorporated into your hair restoration procedure.

Hair transplant treatment planning begins with evaluating the patient’s current pattern of hair loss and identifying the areas where restoration may provide the most appropriate improvement. Donor hair availability and the characteristics of the existing hair are also important considerations.

A consultation allows patients to discuss their restoration goals and understand the factors that may influence their treatment options. Planning may consider both current areas of concern and the potential progression of hair loss over time.

Understanding the planning process can help prospective patients approach a consultation with realistic expectations. Questions about procedure selection, donor hair, restoration goals, recovery, and future hair growth can all be discussed as part of individualized treatment planning.

The results speak for themselves - absolutely uncanny. Like many others, I was naturally a skeptic of hair transplants and the results they could provide. I had already undergone a FUE transplant (not recommended) elsewhere a couple years earlier and did not obtain the results I was hoping for. So,... Read Patient Experience →

I tried FUE and did not get any results from it. I was very disappointed. Dr. Brett Bolton was my last hope I watch all... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
