What Helps Minimize the Appearance of a FUT Donor Scar?

The appearance of the donor area is an important consideration when undergoing FUT hair transplant surgery. The final appearance of the donor scar can be influenced by surgical planning, scalp characteristics, wound closure, tissue handling, and the individual healing process.

What Factors Can Influence the Donor Scar?

  • Donor Area Planning: The donor strip is planned according to the available hair and characteristics of the scalp.
  • Careful Tissue Handling: Gentle handling of the tissue can help minimize unnecessary trauma during surgery.
  • Precise Closure: Appropriate wound closure techniques can help optimize the appearance of the healed incision.
  • Wound Tension: Managing tension along the closure may contribute to a finer-looking scar.
  • Post-Operative Care: Following your surgeon's instructions during recovery supports proper healing.

Will the Donor Scar Be Completely Invisible?

No surgeon can guarantee that a surgical scar will be completely invisible. Scar formation varies between individuals and can be influenced by genetics, skin characteristics, scalp elasticity, and healing response.

How Is Donor Scar Appearance Evaluated?

During a consultation, the donor area can be examined to assess scalp characteristics and discuss the expected appearance following FUT surgery. Previous procedures and existing scars should also be considered when developing an appropriate treatment plan.

Dr. Brett Bolton focuses on careful surgical planning and closure techniques designed to optimize the cosmetic appearance of the donor area while creating a natural-looking hair restoration result.

Recovery is an important stage of the hair transplant process because the scalp needs time to heal following treatment. Patients may experience temporary changes in the treated areas while the scalp recovers and transplanted follicles begin progressing through their natural growth cycle.

The appearance of transplanted hair can change during recovery, and visible growth generally develops gradually rather than immediately after the procedure. Following appropriate post-treatment instructions can help support the healing process.

Understanding the recovery timeline can help patients prepare for the weeks and months following treatment. Individual healing can vary, so patients should follow the guidance provided by their hair restoration professional and discuss concerns during follow-up care.

My entire experience with Dr. Brett Bolton was a breeze and very convenient. Like most men I wanted to not only retain but also improve my personal and physical look. My donor scar is barely visible under all the hair that I have, and my recipient area (hairline) is filling in with thick healthy... Read Patient Experience →

I knew when it came to this procedure I had to be very careful. I had friends that actually looked worse in my area. I was willing to travel to get the best. My local doctors didn't seem as committed to this procedure. I'm very glad I had Dr. Brett Bolton for my procedure. Read Patient Experience →

There is not a whole lot that bothers me about middle age. Everyone has to get older and I feel I do a good job of staying in good shape. I workout and watch what I eat, but could simply not stand my bald spot in the back of my head. Whether it was trying on a suit in a three way mirror, seeing the... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
