Can Hair Loss Be Prevented or Slowed?

Whether hair loss can be prevented or slowed depends on its underlying cause. Some forms of hair loss may be managed with early evaluation and appropriate treatment, while others may not be completely preventable. Identifying the cause early can help determine the most appropriate approach.

What Can Help Protect Existing Hair?

  • Early Evaluation: Identifying the cause of hair loss early can help determine appropriate treatment options.
  • Medical Treatment: Some patients may benefit from clinically established treatments that can help manage certain types of hair loss.
  • Healthy Scalp Care: Maintaining appropriate scalp and hair-care practices can support overall scalp health.
  • Nutrition and Lifestyle: Adequate nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits can support normal hair growth.
  • Regular Monitoring: Monitoring changes in hair density and shedding can help identify progression and prompt further evaluation.

Can Genetic Hair Loss Be Completely Prevented?

Genetic hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is influenced by inherited factors and hormonal sensitivity. It cannot always be completely prevented, but appropriate treatment may help slow progression and preserve existing hair in some patients.

When Is a Hair Transplant Considered?

A hair transplant may be considered when permanent hair loss has occurred and suitable donor follicles are available. A consultation can help determine whether surgical hair restoration is appropriate based on your hair loss pattern, donor supply, and long-term goals.

Dr. Brett Bolton evaluates each patient individually and develops a personalized hair restoration strategy based on the cause and pattern of hair loss, available donor hair, and restoration goals.

Hair restoration involves several stages, from evaluating hair loss and planning treatment to completing the procedure and monitoring the development of transplanted hair. Understanding these stages can help patients gain a clearer picture of the overall restoration process.

Different patients may require different treatment approaches depending on their hair-loss pattern, donor hair characteristics, restoration goals, and other individual factors. This is why hair transplant planning is generally personalized rather than based on a single approach for everyone.

For people researching hair transplantation, reliable information can provide a useful foundation before a consultation. Learning about treatment options, recovery, hair growth, and long-term considerations can help patients prepare questions and make informed decisions about their restoration goals.

My first hair transplant with another doctor was an absolute nightmare. The procedure was painful, extremely expensive, ineffective, and was not personable at all. I was almost ready to give up on having hair in my early 20's and be bald for the rest of my life, which would be devastating. Before... Read Patient Experience →

I really did not care about looking really young, but who wants to look 5 years older? And I still had some hair! Imagine what... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
