Can I Lose More Hair After a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant restores hair in areas affected by permanent hair loss, but it does not necessarily stop the progression of hair loss in the surrounding native hair. Understanding this distinction is important when planning a long-term restoration strategy.

What Happens to Transplanted Hair?

Transplanted follicles are generally selected from donor areas that are more resistant to hereditary hair loss. Once successfully established, these follicles are expected to continue producing hair for many years.

Why Might Native Hair Continue to Thin?

  • Ongoing Genetic Hair Loss: Existing non-transplanted follicles may continue to become thinner over time.
  • Age-Related Changes: Hair density and growth characteristics can naturally change as you age.
  • Progressive Pattern Hair Loss: Hereditary hair loss can continue even after a transplant has been performed.
  • Long-Term Planning: Future changes in hair density should be considered when designing the initial transplant.

Could I Need Another Hair Transplant?

Some patients may consider additional restoration if further native hair loss occurs. Whether another procedure is appropriate depends on factors such as remaining donor hair, the progression of hair loss, previous procedures, and the patient’s goals.

How Can Future Hair Loss Be Considered?

Long-term hair restoration planning helps balance the immediate treatment area with the possibility of future hair loss. Careful donor management can help preserve available follicles for potential future needs.

During your consultation, Dr. Brett Bolton evaluates your current hair loss pattern, donor supply, previous procedures, and long-term goals to develop an individualized restoration strategy.

With more than 10,000+ Hair Restoration Procedures performed and approximately 75% Corrective Hair Transplant Cases, Dr. Brett Bolton focuses on personalized treatment planning and natural-looking, long-term restoration results.

Natural-looking hair restoration depends on careful planning and consideration of how transplanted hair will complement the patient’s existing hair. Factors such as hairline design, hair characteristics, donor availability, and the distribution of existing hair can all be relevant.

The placement of transplanted follicular units is planned according to the areas requiring restoration and the overall appearance the treatment is intended to achieve. Individual hair characteristics can influence how density and coverage are approached.

Patients considering hair transplantation can benefit from discussing their desired appearance and long-term goals during consultation. Understanding how treatment planning relates to natural-looking restoration can help patients make informed decisions about their options.

I had my surgery on 18 Jul 23 and I'm on Day 8 as of date of review. As A NW Class 5-6, with previous surgeries, I was trying to be rational while hoping for the best. What I got was beyond my expectations. The amount of hairs that were transplanted was more than 2x what I thought was achievable.... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
