What Is the Difference Between FUE and FUT Hair Transplants?

FUE and FUT are two different methods of harvesting donor hair follicles for transplantation. The most appropriate approach depends on factors such as your hair loss pattern, donor hair characteristics, previous procedures, and long-term hair restoration goals.

What Is an FUE Hair Transplant?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) involves removing individual follicular units from the donor area and transplanting them into areas affected by hair loss. Unlike FUT, FUE does not require removing a strip of scalp tissue.

What Is a FUT Hair Transplant?

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) involves removing a strip of donor scalp tissue, which is then carefully dissected into individual follicular units for transplantation.

Key Differences Between FUE and FUT

  • Harvesting method: FUE removes individual follicular units, while FUT uses a strip of donor scalp tissue.
  • Scarring: FUE typically results in small, scattered donor-area scars, while FUT may leave a linear scar.
  • Donor management: Both techniques require careful donor-area planning to protect available hair for current and future restoration.
  • Suitability: The appropriate harvesting method depends on each patient's hair loss, donor supply, goals, and medical history.

How Does MaxHarvest™ Compare?

Dr. Brett Bolton also uses his proprietary MaxHarvest™ hair restoration technique as part of his approach to maximizing available donor hair for hair transplantation. The appropriate technique or combination of techniques depends on the patient's individual hair loss pattern, donor availability, and restoration goals.

Which Hair Transplant Method Is Best?

There is no single hair transplant technique that is best for every patient. Successful hair restoration depends on accurate evaluation, careful donor management, natural hairline design, and personalized treatment planning.

During a consultation, Dr. Brett Bolton evaluates your hair loss pattern, donor hair availability, previous procedures, and restoration goals to determine the most appropriate hair restoration strategy.

Transplanted hair develops progressively after a hair transplant as the follicles recover and enter their natural growth cycle. The timing and appearance of new growth can vary between patients, making it important to understand that restoration is a gradual process.

Changes in the transplanted area may occur throughout the recovery period before more noticeable hair growth becomes established. Individual healing, hair characteristics, and the treatment approach can all influence how restoration progresses.

Patients researching hair transplantation should consider the complete growth timeline rather than expecting an immediate final result. Understanding the gradual nature of transplanted hair growth can help establish realistic expectations throughout the restoration process.

I was going to the big name corporate guys in Orlando but figured I should get a second opinion. That was the best thing I could have done. I basically got twice the hair for the same cost and I know that I needed those extra hairs. I would to have gone back at least 2 x to get what Dr. Brett... Read Patient Experience →

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
