What Happens During the Healing Stages of a Hair Transplant?

Hair transplant healing progresses through several stages. The scalp begins recovering soon after the procedure, while transplanted follicles gradually transition through their normal growth cycle. Although the general pattern is similar for many patients, the timing of each stage can vary depending on the procedure, number of grafts, and individual healing response.

What Are the Main Stages of Healing?

  • Early Healing: During the first several days, the donor and recipient areas begin recovering. Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling, or small crusts may occur.
  • Scalp Recovery: Over the following days and weeks, visible signs of the procedure gradually become less noticeable as the scalp continues to heal.
  • Temporary Shedding: Some transplanted hairs may shed after surgery as the follicles transition into a resting phase. This does not necessarily mean the follicles have been lost.
  • New Growth: New hairs begin emerging gradually after the initial recovery period.
  • Hair Maturation: Newly growing hairs can become thicker and more established over the following months.

Does Everyone Heal at the Same Rate?

No. Healing varies between patients. The surgical technique, number of grafts, scalp characteristics, individual healing response, and adherence to post-operative instructions can all influence the recovery process.

What Can Help Support Healing?

  • Follow the post-operative instructions provided by your surgical team.
  • Avoid scratching, rubbing, or unnecessarily touching the treated areas.
  • Use the recommended scalp-washing technique.
  • Protect the healing scalp from excessive sun exposure as instructed.
  • Attend scheduled follow-up appointments.

When Does the Healing Process Finish?

The initial scalp healing occurs much sooner than the final hair-growth process. While visible signs of surgery generally improve during the early recovery period, transplanted hair continues developing and maturing for many months. Your surgeon can provide a more specific timeline based on your individual procedure and restoration plan.

Dr. Brett Bolton provides individualized recovery instructions and monitors each patient's progress to support a healthy healing process and long-term hair restoration results.

Preparing for a hair transplant begins with understanding the procedure, treatment goals, and factors that may influence the individual restoration plan. A consultation provides an opportunity to discuss hair loss, donor hair, treatment options, and questions about recovery.

Patients may also benefit from learning what to expect during the different stages of treatment. Understanding preparation, the procedure itself, recovery, and the gradual development of transplanted hair can make the overall process easier to anticipate.

Good preparation includes having realistic expectations and discussing individual concerns with a hair restoration professional. Every patient has different hair characteristics and treatment requirements, so personalized guidance is important when preparing for transplantation.

Got my third transplant from Dr. Bolton recently. The first was 22yrs ago, and the second 10yrs ago. There's two reasons why I keep going back to Dr. Bolton; one to keep up with the inevitable hair loss of DHT vulnerable, non transplanted hair, and two because he does outstanding work. I feel so... Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
