What Is the Difference Between FUT and FUE Hair Transplants?

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) are two commonly used hair transplant techniques. Both methods involve moving healthy hair follicles from a donor area to areas affected by hair loss, but they differ primarily in how the donor follicles are harvested.

What Is FUE?

FUE involves individually extracting follicular units from the donor area using specialized instruments. Because the follicles are removed individually, FUE does not require the linear donor incision associated with FUT. FUE may be appropriate for patients who prefer to wear their hair shorter or who are candidates for an individual follicular unit harvesting approach.

What Is FUT?

FUT involves carefully removing a thin strip of donor tissue containing healthy follicular units. The individual grafts are then prepared and transplanted into the recipient area. With appropriate surgical closure, the resulting linear donor scar may be concealed by the surrounding hair.

Which Technique Is Better?

There is no single technique that is best for every patient. The appropriate approach depends on factors such as:

  • The extent and pattern of hair loss.
  • The number of grafts required.
  • Donor hair density and characteristics.
  • Future hair restoration goals.
  • Previous hair transplant procedures.
  • Personal preferences regarding donor-area scarring and hairstyle.

How Is the Right Technique Selected?

A qualified hair restoration surgeon evaluates your scalp, donor hair availability, hair loss pattern, and long-term goals before recommending a treatment plan. In some cases, a particular technique may be more appropriate than another based on the patient's individual circumstances.

With more than 10,000+ Hair Restoration Procedures performed and approximately 75% Corrective Hair Transplant Cases, Dr. Brett Bolton develops customized hair restoration plans based on each patient's unique needs.

A hair transplant involves relocating follicular units from a suitable donor area to areas affected by hair loss or thinning. The procedure is planned around the patient’s existing hair pattern, available donor hair, and desired level of restoration.

The treatment process includes several stages, including consultation, treatment planning, the procedure itself, recovery, and the gradual development of transplanted hair. Understanding these stages can help patients prepare for the overall restoration journey.

Because hair characteristics and restoration goals differ between patients, the details of treatment can also vary. A personalized consultation provides an opportunity to discuss the procedure and determine an appropriate treatment strategy.

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
