When Can I Return to Work After a Hair Transplant?

Many patients are able to return to work within a few days after a hair transplant, although the appropriate timing varies depending on the procedure performed, the nature of your job, and your individual healing and comfort level.

When Do Most Patients Return to Work?

  • Many office workers can return within 2 to 5 days.
  • Patients with physically demanding jobs may need additional recovery time.
  • If your work requires wearing a helmet or protective headgear, your surgeon will advise when it is appropriate to resume those activities.

What Should I Expect During the First Week?

Mild redness, swelling, and small scabs can occur as part of the normal healing process. These temporary changes generally improve during the first week or longer, depending on the individual. Following your post-operative instructions carefully helps support proper healing and protects the newly transplanted grafts.

Tips Before Returning to Work

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity until your surgeon says it is safe.
  • Protect your scalp from direct sunlight as instructed by your surgical team.
  • Avoid rubbing, scratching, or picking at the transplanted area.
  • Follow your hair-washing instructions exactly as provided.
  • Attend your scheduled follow-up appointments.

Planning Your Recovery

Every patient heals differently. During your consultation, Dr. Brett Bolton will explain what to expect after surgery and recommend an appropriate timeline for returning to work based on your procedure, occupation, and individual recovery.

Recovery is an important stage of the hair transplant process because the scalp needs time to heal following treatment. Patients may experience temporary changes in the treated areas while the scalp recovers and transplanted follicles begin progressing through their natural growth cycle.

The appearance of transplanted hair can change during recovery, and visible growth generally develops gradually rather than immediately after the procedure. Following appropriate post-treatment instructions can help support the healing process.

Understanding the recovery timeline can help patients prepare for the weeks and months following treatment. Individual healing can vary, so patients should follow the guidance provided by their hair restoration professional and discuss concerns during follow-up care.

Our Pricing Philosophy

Please understand that we do not charge by the graft. We believe that pricing hair transplantation this way can be misleading. For example, when a clinic quotes “1,000 grafts,” that number alone does not indicate how much hair you are actually receiving. A graft may contain one, two, or three hairs, and each situation represents a very different total amount of hair, even though the patient is charged the same based solely on the graft count. For this reason, we believe that graft-based pricing does not always reflect the true value or outcome of a procedure.

Instead, we have chosen what we believe is a fairer and more transparent approach: pricing based on the amount of donor tissue removed. Our planning is based on averages. The average adult male has approximately 200 hairs per square centimeter in the donor area, although individual hair density varies. Regardless of individual density, patients at the same pricing level receive approximately the same amount of donor tissue extracted. This provides consistency in the amount of tissue removed rather than relying on graft numbers that can vary significantly in hair content.

While it is not possible to guarantee an exact number of square centimeters removed, we make every effort to come as close as possible to the planned amount. When feasible, we aim to slightly exceed the planned amount rather than fall short.
